Saint John XXIII's given name was Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli. He was born on
November 25, 1881 in Sotto il Monte Giovanni, Italy. He was the fourth
child and he had 13 brothers. He became an ordained priest in 1904.
After he was ordained, he went back to Rome for canon law studies.
While there, he worked as his bishops secretary, church history teacher,
and published the diocesan paper. Later on he became a bishop in 1925.
In 1953 he became a cardinal then became a pope in 1958. His
nickname was “The Good Pope”.
Angelo was said
to be the most influential pope ever. In 1962 he created the Second
Vatican Council. He made it possible for someone in any country to become
a cardinal. He was very old (77 years old) when he became Pope. Less
than three months after he got elected pope, he decided to change the code of
canon law, which is the churches laws. He decided to change the limit of
cardinals from 70 to 87. He promoted human rights and dignity and said it
was a basis for world peace. The International Balzan Foundation awarded
him its Peace Prize in 1962. He sent notes to John F. Kennedy during the
Cuban missile crisis asking for peace between the countries. Time Magazine
announced him Man of the Year in 1962. He was beatified by Pope John Paul
II on September 3, 2000, and canonized by Pope Francis on April 2, 2o14.
One of the miracles contributed to Angelo was the curing of a sick nun
after they laid a relic of him on her stomach, she had a vision of him 3 days
later and she was healed.
Angelo was diagnosed with
stomach cancer and died on June 3 1963. He was 81 years old when he died.
When he was diagnosed with stomach cancer he kept it a secret. He
kept it a secret until eventually he hinted he would die soon. People
thought he was one of the best popes ever. When he died a lot of people
were very sad. The pope elected after him was Paul V.
