Chapter 7: The Sounding of the Call
Discussion Questions:
1.) London describes Buck's
dreams of the primitive man: "The salient thing of this other world seemed
fear." What does he mean by this? Why would that be true? Why
isn't Thornton's world filled with fear?
London means that Buck gets scared when he doesn't see John Thornton. It would be true because Buck loves John Thornton very much. Thornton's world isn't filled with fear because when Buck is with him, Buck
isn't afraid because Buck sees Thornton.
2.) Why is Buck intent on
befriending the wolf? What makes him break off their travels and return to
camp? What does this say about Buck's place in the world?
Buck is intent on befriending the wolf because the wolf stops running and becomes friends with Buck. Buck can be friends
with a lot of wolves and dogs.
3.) What
does Buck's fight with the bear and the moose display about his embrace of the
call? Why do you think London included them in the story? What
predictions can you make about Buck's future?
Buck's fight with the bear and the moose display that he is strong and he can
fight really well. I think London included them in the story because they
show that Buck can overcome big obstacles. I predict that Buck will win
other dogs in fights and he won't die from other wolves.
4.) What does Buck learn
from his slaughter of the Yeehats? Does this make his answering of the
call harder or easier? Explain.
It means that the Yeehats are very mean and will kill Buck. This makes his answering of the call harder.
5.) Does the book have a happy or
sad ending? Explain your answer. What do you think London would
say?
I think the book has a sad ending because John Thornton died who Buck love very much. London would say that it would be a sad ending to.
