Early
Life:
Pope
Saint John Paul II was born on May 18,1920 in Wadowice, Poland. His real name is
Karol Jozef Wojtyla. His parents were Maria Anna and Feliks Kaczorowski. When he
was 9 years old his mother died and when Karol Jozef Wojtyla was 12 years old
his older brother named Edmund died. Karol Jozef Wojtyla favorite sports were
skiing and swimming. Karol Jozef Wojtyla went to school at Krakow’s Jagiellonian
University in 1938. In 1938 the school was closed by Nazis who were going to
Poland.
Middle
Life:
After
World War II ended Karol Jozef Wojtyla was ordained a priest in 1946. Karol
Jozef Wojtyla became a bishop in 1958 and was archbishop of Krakow in 1964. He
was elected to the college of cardinals in 1967. He became the pope in 1978.
Since he was Pope his name was now Pope John Paul II. When he was pope he
traveled to more countries than any other pope has gone before. He went to
different countries to spread the word of God. In 1981, a person tried to shoot
Pope John Paul II twice in the Vatican in St Peters Square. He recovered after
the shooting and then he forgave the person who attacked him. A famous quote
that Pope John Paul II made is “As the family goes, so goes the nation, and so
goes the whole world in which we live.” After the shooting he started to get
weaker and he started to move slower. His doctor said that he had a brain
disorder and he had to take things easy for a while.
Late
Life:
Pope
John Paul II died on April 2, 2005 in Italy. Pope John Paul II died at the age
of 84. He died because of a brain disorder that made him not walk very
stable. About 3 million people came to the funeral of Pope John Paul II. On July
5, 2013 the Vatican announced that Pope John Paul would be declared a saint. The
canonization was on April 27, 2014. Pope John Paul II is now Pope Saint John
Paul
II.
