Glossary of Poetic Terms
Define the following terms as they apply to poetry. Find examples in the

Alliteration - The reoccurring of a letter or sound. "Beat beat beating" (p. 9)
Assonance - The Rhyming of to vowels. "Can't do it brains empty" page 2
Figurative Language - Send ideas indirectly. "The wheelbarrow guy did not tell why" (p. 3)
Hyperbole - Exaggeration of a figure of speech. "Some of tiger sounds are in my ear like a drum beat beat." (p. 9)
Irony - The opposite of what you think in order to be funny. "Why doesn't the person just keep going if he's got so many miles to go before he sleeps?" (p. 6)
Imagery - To imagine pictures in your mind. "Maybe the wheelbarrow poet was just making a picture with words." (p. 22)
Metaphor - A word or phrase that is used to refer another thing. "Some of the tiger sounds are still in my ears like drums beat-beat-beating." (p.9)
Meter - Something you use to measure rhythm. "Blue car, blue car, shining bright in the darkness of the night: who could see you speeding by like a comet in the sky?" (p. 8)
Narrator - A person who comments on a movie, book, or play. "What do you mean--- Why does so much depend upon a blue car?"

Onomatopoeia - A formation of a word from a sound. "Some are tiger sounds are still in my ears like drums
beat-beat-beating." (p.9)
Personification - The attribution of a personal nature or human
characteristics. "write about the blue car that had miles to go before it slept"
(p.7)
Point of View - A particular attitude or way of considering a matter. "I tried cant do it. Brains empty" (p.2)
Rhyme - ends with a sound that matches to another.
